The 37 year wait for a Triple Crown winner is over as Zayat Stables’ American Pharoah stamped his authority on Saturday’s Belmont Stakes with a near six lengths demolition.
Ridden by Victor Espinoza for trainer Bob Baffert, American Pharoah went straight to the front and as Espinoza gradually increased the pace his opponents retreated one by one until only Godolphin’s Frosted remained in contention rounding the home turn. But Espinoza still had a handful of horse and when he let the rein out a notch, American Pharoah left Frosted in his wake as 90,000 fans at Belmont and millions around the world began to celebrate the 12th Triple Crown winner. Having fallen at the final hurdle three times before with Silver Charm (1997), Real Quiet (1998) and War Emblem (2002), Bob Baffert looked to have the weight of the world lifted from his shoulders. "We knew we had the horse and we were hoping we had the horse," Baffert told The Blood-Horse. "Once Victor got him in the clear and got him in that beautiful mode of the way he just goes over the ground. Every fraction—I saw (1:13) and change and I just loved that, then 1:37. They turned for home and I was prepared for somebody coming, because I've gone through this so many times. I was just hoping, for once—I could tell by the eighth pole that it was going to happen. "All I did was just take in the crowd. The crowd was just thundering and I was enjoying the call, and the crowd, and the noise—everything happening. Thirty-seven years—that little horse, he deserves it." American Pharoah is a son of the Zayat owned Pioneer Of The Nile (Empire Maker) whose career came to an end when 11th in the Preakness Stakes after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby. A $300,000 buy-back for Zayat at the 2013 Saratoga Yearling sale, American Pharoah is out of Littleprincessemma, a $250,000 yearling, who showed little ability in two starts. A daughter of the Storm Cat stallion Yankee Gentlemen, Littleprincessemma is a half-sister to Grade II winner Storm Wolf (Stormin Fever) and Grade III winner and Grade 1 placed Misty Rosestte (Stormin Fever). The winner of seven of his eight starts, American Pharoah is the third foal out of Littleprincessemma who foaled a brother to the Triple Crown winner earlier this year. Coolmore have secured the breeding rights to American Pharoah, so there is a good chance we may see him in Australia. Team News Juventus: Juventus have suffered a major injury blow during their preparations for Saturday’s Final, revealing last week that Andrea Barzagli had an issue with his thigh. The central defender is a crucial member of the squad, his calm approach offering experience and assuredness against Europe’s most gifted attacks. Max Allegri had utilised the former Palermo and Wolfsburg man as a tactical weapon, deploying him in all three knockout rounds to great effect. Should Barzagli not recover in time to face Barcelona, it will likely prevent the Bianconeri from using the 3-5-2 formation should they manage to grab a lead. Instead, Allegri most will most likely use what he calls a “4-3-and then we’ll see,” a framework which allows him to field all four of the club’s excellent midfielders. Paul Pogba, Claudio Marchisio and Andrea Pirlo will play in the centre, with Arturo Vidal playing in an advanced role to support Carlos Tevez and Alvaro Morata, Juve can quickly transition from defence into attack. Dermot Corrigan on Barcelona: Barcelona coach Luis Enrique’s only selection concern is over midfielder Andres Iniesta, who picked up a calf muscle in last Saturday’s 3-1 Copa del Rey final win over Athletic Bilbao. Veteran Xavi Hernandez, in what is his last ever Barca game, or youngster Rafinha Alcantara are standing by if required, but Iniesta himself has said he expects to be fit to play. Centre-forward Luis Suarez returned from a hamstring problem against Athletic and looks sure to start again and renew his rivalry with Juve’s Giorgio Chiellini and Patrice Evra. Germany under-21 international Marc-Andre-Ter Stegen starts in goal, as Barca’s ‘Copa-keeper’. Form Guide Adam: Having wrapped up a fourth consecutive Serie A title by early May, Juventus suffered an understandable dip in their domestic form. They rallied from that slump however, recording wins over Inter (2-1) and Napoli (3-1) despite fielding heavily rotated line-ups and then concluded the campaign with a 2-2 draw away to Hellas Verona. The Bianconeri also clinched only the third league and cup double in club history, lifting the Coppa Italia after defeating an excellent Lazio side just two weeks ago. Dermot: With Lionel Messi, Neymar and Suarez already on 120 goals between them this season, Barca’s form could hardly be better really. Since recovering from a mini-crisis in early January, Luis Enrique’s side have won 30 of their 34 games as they’ve closed in on a treble of La Liga, Copa and Champions League. Opponents of the calibre of Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Paris Saint Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have all been pretty easily blown away. Rarely if ever in recent years has a team reached the end of a club season firing on so many cylinders at the same time. What The Managers Say Juve’s Max Allegri: “Preparing for a game like this is enjoyable. Everyone dreams of doing so and I consider myself very fortunate to coach players who have brought great joy over these past four years. It’s been an extraordinary season that will go down in history, and winning the Champions League would make it even better. We need to appreciate that we’ll be in for some difficult spells but also moments that go in our favour. We’re not travelling to Berlin to make up the numbers. It’s the final and taking on the world’s best players is something that’s perfectly normal, but this shouldn’t make us anxious as we have great character.” Barca’s Luis Enrique: “We have had a very good Champions League. We have come through against the champions of England, France, Germany, now we play against the Italian champions. Finals always have a very important psychological aspect, but we are convinced we will play a good game.” Best Moment On The Road To Berlin Adam: Beating Real Madrid in the first leg of the semi-final was perhaps the watershed moment for this Juventus side in their surprising Champions League run. The emphatic away win over Borussia Dortmund was arguably a more complete performance, but that victory over Carlo Ancelotti’s men undoubtedly came against a much tougher opponent. Overcoming the attacking quality of Cristiano Ronaldo and his free-scoring team-mates provided the Bianconeri not only with supreme confidence, but also the ideal blueprint for a battle with Spain’s other giant club. Dermot: The semi-final with Bayern Munich was still neatly balanced as the first leg at the Camp Nou moved into the last 15 minutes. Bayern coach Josep Guardiola had brought an injury-hit team back to his former club, and rode his luck a bit through the opening stages, but seemed set to take a creditable 0-0 draw back to Munich. That was until Lionel Messi’s superb 20 yard strike arrowed past Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer, and from then on there was never really any doubt about who would progress. Key Man Adam: Carlos Tevez is the obvious candidate here, as the Argentinean sets the tone for Juventus. A genuine leader, his example has been picked up by the likes of Pogba, Morata and Roberto Pereyra, with the talented young trio now matching the ferocious work ethic of the former Manchester City star whenever they take to the field. Yet Tevez allies that famous tenacity with genuine ability, whether in terms of his accuracy in front of goal or his incredible technical ability on the ball. Able to beat defenders and goalkeepers with consummate skill, he deserves to be part of the conversation whenever the world’s very best players are discussed. Dermot: This just cannot be anyone other than Messi, who stands head and shoulders above even fantastically talented teammates like Neymar, Suarez and Iniesta. Even while playing in a new more withdrawn right-sided playmaking role, the 27-year-old has scored 58 goals this season, including two in the Copa final last weekend, one of which is amongst the best goals of his entire career. Messi has also scored in both his previous Champions League finals, and Barca won them both too. He needs just one goal against Juve to move ahead of Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and become the 2014/15 Champions League top-scorer. Unless the Serie A champions can find a way to at least hamper his contribution to the game, they’ve no chance of winning. Score Prediction Adam: Juventus 2-1 Barcelona at 19.00. If this were a two-legged tie, the Catalan giants would perhaps be certain winners, but over the course of a single game, anything is possible. Dermot: Juventus 1-3 Barcelona at 14.00. Best Bet Adam: Should my score prediction come true then Tevez is likely to be hugely influential, and a 2-1 win with a goal for the Argentinean star at any time is available at a highly tempting 35.00. Dermot: Barca to be ahead at half-time at 2.1 Brisbane’s winter carnival reaches its crescendo on Saturday with a super card of action awaiting us, highlighted by the running of three Group One events. The first of those, the JJ Atkins, looks an extremely competitive heat with Chris Waller’s unbeaten Press Statement a $4.20 favourite in our Fixed Odds market after the master trainer made the late decision to accept for this race, perhaps influenced by his impressive win at Rosehill last weekend. Peter Moody’s Bassett fills the second line of betting at $4.40 after performing well in a trackwork gallop earlier in the week and while the step up from 1100m to a mile is unusual the trainer was this week talking up his chances, suggesting that this race was always on the radar as the horse is so adaptable. Chris Waller has a strong hand in the race with both Counterattack ($5) and Feast for Eyes ($18) having legitimate claims while Look to the Stars ($9) scored a knockout win in the Sires Produce and will look to repeat the dose under apprentice Luke Tarrant.
Coming off a solid win in last Saturday’s Eagle Farm Cup, where he became the first three year-old winner of the event in 20 years, Kiwi galloper Werther ($3.20) heads the betting for the Queensland Derby and having drawn favourably on the rails should be able to secure a nice run under Jim Byrne. While there was a query from some quarters as to his ability to back up in seven days, trainer Andrew Campbell was keen to quash those concerns, pointing out that the horse had already done so recently back in New Zealand and had trained on “super” since that effort. The other main contenders have come out of the Grand Prix Stakes, with Darren Weir’s Master of Arts ($4.20) perhaps the run of that race after making up plenty of ground from deep in the field and the extra distance here should suit, while Moody was keen to talk up the chances of the ultra consistent Upham ($10) although his wide draw is somewhat of a concern. At the time of writing there is still conjecture as to the final make-up of the Stradbroke Field, with favourite Lumosty ($5) listed as the first emergency and reliant on a scratching to make the cut, Robbie Laing’s Lord of the Sky the most likely to make way if track conditions fail to deteriorate. Robert Smerdon’s glamour filly looked awesome in winning down the straight six at Flemington a fortnight ago and under her light weight should give this a real shake if she gets a run. Of those guaranteed a start, Western Australian Black Heart Bart ($6) has been heavily supported this week after rattling home behind Flamberge in the Goodwood but he will be making his first appearance at Doomben after trainer Vaughn Sigley elected to work the horse away from the track during the week, Boban ($11) was back to his best with a thumping win in the Doomben 10,000 but will concede a fair bit of weight to most of his rivals while Srikandi ($13) has become somewhat of the forgotten horse after an underwhelming effort in the 10,000 but would surely be right in this on her best form. Prizemoney in Victoria will be boosted by more than $16 million for the next racing season with a sum set aside to enhance the autumn carnival.
The extra $16.5 million will take the total amount available in Victoria for the 2015/16 season to $174.2 million, not including VOBIS bonuses, making a 21.3 percent increase on gross stakes since 2012. There is $3 million set aside to enhance the autumn carnival and across the board increases for night racing with minimum country prizemoney rising from $20,000 to $25,000 in recognition of the additional costs to compete. Racing Victoria general manager racing Greg Carpenter said the focus was on attracting owners and putting on races that attract wagering. "We need to get people involved in ownership and then retain them,” Carpenter said. "We have tried to aim the lion’s share of the new funding at the greatest number of participants.” Under the new structure more than two-thirds of the prizemoney increases are aimed at country races with a 25 percent increase to $20,000 for all TAB races apart from 0-58 races. Non-TAB races have been increased to $10,000. Prizemoney will increase across all maidens, which make up 33 percent of Victorian TAB races with country TAB maidens now worth a minimum $20,000, country premier maidens $23,000, country night maidens $25,000 and midweek metropolitan maidens $27,000. "We believe the top end is well catered for and we wanted to adopt a grass roots approach and build from the bottom up,” Carpenter said. "We want to drive people to run their maiden horses in maiden races. Everyone that owns a horse looks to win that first race.” Saturday open handicaps will now be worth $90,000 and the additional ninth race has been increased 25 percent to $50,000. Carpenter was at pains to stress the increased prizemoney was aimed at stimulating wagering further. "This was not about looking at New South Wales and saying we have to pay more than them,” Carpenter said. "It is about what is right for Victoria and matching prizemoney to support races that give us the best wagering outcome.” Carpenter said the autumn carnival was being looked at and he expected an announcement on changes shortly. "We feel there is a good opportunity in the autumn and we want to drive interstate and international participation,” Carpenter said. "We have a challenge dealing with three metropolitan clubs and we have to sell the concept to them, "Seeing how successful the spring racing is we are now looking to grow the autumn.” Big go for UK import - $21 into $4.80
John O’Shea has an almost faultless record of getting imports home at their first Australian start and early betting would suggest there is another one ready to strike at Randwick on Saturday. John O’Shea has an almost faultless record of getting imports home at their first Australian start and early betting would suggest there is another one ready to strike at Randwick on Saturday. Magic Hurricane is a lightly raced five-year-old gelding with two victories over staying journeys in the UK. O’Shea has given him two unplaced lead-up trials at headquarters and has hit the line under a hold on each occasion. The import resumes in the Randwick City Council Handicap Benchmark 94 (1400m) and after opening at $21 with online betting giant Bet365, has trimmed right up, currently into $5.50 with Bet365 and as short as $4.80 with Sportsbet. "He’s a really nice horse,” O’Shea said. "I would rather him at the mile but I thought the same thing about It’s Somewhat.” It’s Somewhat was produced off two unplaced lead-up trials to win the Group III Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Warwick Farm in February. O’Shea also produced Contributer first-up in Australia to win the Group III Coongy (2000m) at Caulfield during the spring of 2014 and Hartnell finished runner-up behind Contributer at his first try in Australia in the Group I Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m). O’Shea nominated the Group I Metropolitan (2400m) as a potential longer term target for the son of Irish stayer Hurricane Run. The Godolphin juggernaut will also be represented by odds-on favourite Holler in the opening race at Randwick on Saturday – the Jewellery Liquidators Plate 2YO (1100m). Holler was a convincing winner over this route on debut back in January. "I’m confident,” O’Shea said. "I really like the horse. He’ll have this run then go out for a freshen-up. A race like the Golden Rose would be on the cards for him.” O’Shea also suggests punters give Transfers another chance in the final race – the Eastern Heart Clinic Benchmark 85 Handicap (1400m). "She’s racing well and looking for the 1400-metres,” O’Shea said. "As long as it’s not too wet.” Barbed rounds out the Randwick quartet for O’Shea, resuming in the Listed June Stakes (1100m). "The wide barrier makes it tough,” he said. "He’s going well enough but will need all the favours from out there.” RACE 1. Northern Meteor’s record breaking son Deep Field is proving most attractive to broodmare owners with last week’s $1,1 million MM Broodmare Sale purchase Villa Verde a confirmed booking along with the dam of a highly prized Group I winner. A Group II winning daughter of Not a Single Doubt, who was a brilliant spring two year-old stakes-winner, Villa Verde was an early favourite for the Golden Slipper of her year. "She had an extraordinary physique," said James Bester, who bought the dashing grey on behalf of Kia Ora Stud, who raced Deep Field in partnership with Alan Bell and retain an interest. Another booking for Deep Field that is sure to help him off to a flying start is that of Newscaster, the dam of Group I ATC Queen of the Turf Stakes winner Amanpour, who sold at Magic Millions for $1.5 million. Her dam was also sold at that sale for $550,000 to China Horse Club and it’s not hard to see why Deep Field would be an appealing option as he is a son of Amanpour’s sire Northern Meteor as is another of Newscaster’s three stakes-winners Sports Edition. Deep Field will be fully booked at Newgate Farm a fee of $22,000 this spring. News from Newgate Farm Stratum Colts Tops MM National Yearling Opener
A colt by leading sire Stratum topped the first day of the Magic Millions National Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast today for Yarraman Park. |
