Poitier (Morphettville R7 No.12) - is a fascinating runner, perhaps THE fascinating runner in Adelaide this weekend. He's always been a pretty fair horse. In fact, trainer David Hayes started him off in a Blue Diamond Prelude. He finished 8th off 11 beaten 6.9-lens by Sepoy who won by 3.5-lens and the Hayes horse was disappointed for a run. Had a year off after that and resumed with a crushing 4.3lens win at Mornington. Hasn't gone on to any real heights after that but he's a handy horse no doubt about it and you can bet he's done enough work at home to make a real impact.

The Thomas Affair (Hawkesbury Sunday R7 No. 7) - is a Dylan Thomas gelding from the Bjorn Baker stable who was tipped out after an ordinary debut at Warwick Farm back on August 28. He wouldn't be the first horse to hand in a dud first run. Take it as read that he was a different horse in his trial at the Farm on Dec 6, racing away to win by 2-lens under no pressure at all. Drawn wide on Sunday but it's a moderate field and he deserves close attention.

Salon Soldier winning at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day The promising German stayer, who won both starts this spring, was found to have ruptured his cecum after rapidly falling ill earlier this morning. The rare condition is similar to a burst appendix, and spreads toxic bacteria throughout the body. Salon Soldier won at Randwick on debut for Lees in October before claiming the Listed Visit Victoria Plate (1800m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day. Hong Kong stewards have suspended top Sydney jockey Tommy Berry for one month for failing to ride one of his mounts out to the finish of a race at Sha Tin on Sunday
Tommy Berry Berry was banned for 10 Hong Kong meetings after finishing third on Smart Man in the last race on Sha Tin’s showcase international race day. Berry had earlier ridden two winners for the John Moore stable before he was called to an inquiry over his riding of Smart Man in the closing stages. Berry pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to ride his mount to the end of the race to the satisfaction of the stewards but was not prepared for the severity of the penalty handed down by the HKJC stewards panel chaired by former Sydney steward Kim Kelly and his deputy Steve Railton. With only two meetings a week in Hong Kong Berry will be sidelined from riding in races from December 15 until January 16, ruling him out of coming summer feature races in Sydney as well as the rich Magic Millions carnival at the Gold Coast in early January. It will be a costly suspension as Berry as he was in line for top rides at the Magic Millions carnival from the Gai Waterhouse stable. However Berry received a small break from the stewards as they agreed to defer the start of his suspension until after next Saturday’s Sydney meeting featuring the $175,000 Villiers Stakes at Randwick. Berry, who rode his first international Group One winner in Hong Kong earlier this year, was the only jockey suspended after Sunday’s Sha Tin meeting. The well bred Wawail will now be aimed toward the Blue Diamond after posting a debut victory at Caulfield on Wednesday.
By Lonhro out of former David Hayes-trained Group winner El Daana, connections had high hopes for the filly heading into the Beveridge Williams 2YO Plate (1000m). Second favourite behind another well bred type in Ready To Fight , Wawail sat outside Ready To Fight throughout. As the favourite began to weaken well before straightening Wawail found herself in the lead soon upon turning for home. Wawail did appear to stargaze down the straight but regardless a three quarter length success ensued. “This filly looks as if she has a bit of toe,” David Hayes Stable Representative Lizzie Jelfs said. “She has had a very good preparation. She has done nothing but impress us at home. She has had two soft trials where she has jumped out, been very professional and won them. “Under race pressure we wanted to see how she went and she has gone out and impressed us today. “She has had an orientation and gone back out and so this is probably her second prep back in.” “She will probably go back to Euroa for a freshen up for the Blue Diamond.” Wawail’s debut victory also saw jockey Chad Schofield hit the ground running with the filly his first ride since a lengthy 22 meeting suspension. “I was out for the best part of three weeks but on the plus side I had time to recharge and refresh after the carnival,” Schofield said. “I’m back now and looking forward to getting stuck back into it.” Wawail is just one of a large juvenile contingent Hayes is expected to have aimed at the Blue Diamond with the leading trainer entering 41 two-year-olds at the first declaration stage last month. “Before I left for my holiday she’d been working quite well and the stable was quite confident she would run well today,” Schofield said. “She bounced well, travelled well outside the leader. “I left a green two-year-old having her first start out in front a long way from home. She was waiting for them so for that reason it gave even more credit to the win.” Wawail is the first foal to race out of Group 2 winner El Daana . It’s business as usual at Leilani Lodge after the healing of a rift between Bart Cummings and his grandson James.
The fledgling training partnership between the pair was reportedly on the rocks last week after a fall out over stable management but their differences were apparently settled over a family lunch on Sunday. James Cummings, the son of Anthony Cummings, had worked for his octogenarian grandfather as stable foreman for several years before it was announced they would form a training partnership from the start of the current racing season. Bart Cummings is now spending the majority of his time on his farm west of Sydney and apparently found fault with the way his grandson was handling stable staff. A week ago reports surfaced that the partnership would be dissolved with Bart Cummings happy to devote his time to preparing a select team of horses at Hawkesbury closer to his home at Princes Farm. However it appears blood is thicker than water with Jack Fisher, a spokesman for the family, confirming all is good between the champion trainer and his grandson. “I can tell you, in Bart's words, the Cummings dynasty is a united family and I'm happy to say all is well now,” Fisher said.
