Leading sires Fastnet Rock and Snitzel headed a buoyant market driven by overseas buyers on the opening day of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale at Newmarket on Tuesday.
On a day when 15 lots sold from $500,000 up to $1.6 million, overseas buyers from Asia, Europe and the US accounted for 14 of the top bracket.
UK agent John Warren, the Queen's racing manager but on this occasion buying for clients including the China Horse Club, paid the top price of $1.6 million to secure the Fastnet Rock colt from Alinghi’s sister Perfect Persuasion offered by CoolmoreStud.
The 124 lots sold realised $34.815 million and while the gross was down 10 percent on day one last year when 127 lots were sold, the median of $200,000 was on a par with the the 2013 first session and the clearance rate of 74% was slightly higher.
“Competition in the ring has been fantastic. Buyers recognise that year on year Easter rolls out champions on the racetrack and in the breeding barn, and they come back to buy the next generation – it’s a well-known and proven formula,” said Inglis' managing director Mark Webster.
Overseas buyers on Day One came from Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, New Zealand, US, United Kingdom, Ireland, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
Trainers, agents and syndicators from all over Australia were active today including Mark Kavanagh, Danny O’Brien, Peter Moody, Sam Kavanagh, Mick Price, Edwards Elkington Racing, Bjorn Baker, Anthony Cummings, Gai Waterhouse, Round Table Racing, Boomer Bloodstock, Snowden Racing, John Chalmers Bloodstock, Dynamic Syndications, Triple Crown Bloodstock and Snowden Racinge.
“There is such as broad range of owners, trainers, agents and syndicators all here at Newmarket, making for some great bidding duels over the cream of Australasia’s yearling crop yet again,” added Webster.
While the gross slipped from $38.855m in 2013, there were plenty of records on day one with new highs set for a colt by Snitzel and a filly by Lonhro at a yearling auction.
The record auction price for a yearling by Snitzel was set when Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum outbid agent James Harron as well as John Warren and the China Horse Club for Arrowfield Stud’s brother to G1 winner Snitzerland (Snitzel x Monte Rosa) $1.5 million.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa also secured the third highest priced yearling going to $1.050 million for a filly by Street Cry from Munhro offered from the draft of Segenhoe Stud.
At the end of day one Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa had bought four yearlings for $3.625 million with Hawkes Racing favoured to train at least two of his purchases.
A new record price was set for a Lonhro yearling at auction when US-based agent John Moynihan beat Shadwell Stud’s Angus Gold to purchase Turangga Farm’s filly from Midnight Joy for $840,000.
The Lonhro filly and a Fastnet Rock filly bought by Kentucky’s famous Spendthrift Farm for $400,000 will both race in Australia
